Have you thought about your RPO and RTO? 🤔

We all use this in some form or another. This includes an iPhone backing up to iCloud or a Apple Mac backing up to Time Machine. From large corporations to individual users, If you are using a service, there is a good chance that this is running in the background.

RPO – Recovery Point Objective: The data lost between the last backup and now.

RTO – Recovery Time Objective: The time it takes to recover from failure.

Recently, My main work computer failed after an update. 😱 Luckily I had a backup saved from the previous day. But, Everything that changed after that backup would be lost. RPO of 1 day.

The RTO was a lot worse than I originally thought. Transferring the data over my network and getting the computer back and running took about 9 hours. I’m sure the sounds coming from the vintage mechanical hard drive did not help the RTO. 😞

This made me think about other solutions like having a dedicated external SSD attached to the computer for faster data transfers.

Have you had think about RPO and RTO?
